The Fossey Fund protects two of the four gorilla subspecies — the critically endangered Grauer’s gorillas in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and the endangered mountain gorillas in the Virunga mountains of Rwanda.
The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International (originally the Digit Fund) is a charity for the protection of endangered mountain gorillas. The Digit Fund was created by Dr. Dian Fossey in 1978 for the sole purpose of financing her anti-poaching patrols and preventing further poaching of the mountain gorillas.
The Gorilla Organization was founded in the early 1990s to support the anti-poaching patrols created by the pioneering primatologist Dr. Dian Fossey. Building on Dr. Fossey’s legacy, we looked into the reasons why wild gorilla poaching was so prevalent in Africa’s national parks.

Following her tragic murder in 1985, The Digit Fund was renamed the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. The success of Fossey’s book Gorillas in the Mist also brought the plight of the mountain gorilla to the world’s attention.
