New Market, town, Shenandoah county, northwestern Virginia, U.S., in the Shenandoah Valley. Laid out in 1784 and early known as Crossroads, it was incorporated in 1796 and renamed for the famous English horseracing town.

New Market, Virginia – Established 1796. Settlers first discovered the New Market area’s fertile lands, wild game, and minerals in 1727, nearly 300 years ago, with many of the first settlers being Germans of the Mennonite and Lutheran faiths, later joined by many Scots and Irish.
The site of a famous Civil War battle, in which the young cadets of the Virginia Military Institute marched for four days to challenge and defeat Union troops moving down the valley. A state park, two museums, and a yearly reenactment bring their story to life.
