Sunil Kumar is an Indian-born academic administrator serving as president of Tufts University since July 1, 2023. He was previously the provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Johns Hopkins University from 2016 to 2023.

Sunil Kumar is the president of Tufts University and assumed office on July 1, 2023. He is the 14th president of Tufts and the first person of color to hold the office. He also serves as a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Tufts University’s School of Engineering.
In this role, he was the chief academic officer and second-ranking member of the senior administration, responsible for promoting and coordinating Johns Hopkins’ teaching and research mission. He oversaw the university’s nine schools as well as several interdisciplinary programs and academic centers.
Dr. Kumar, who currently serves as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs of Johns Hopkins University, will assume office on July 1, 2023. He will be the first Asian American and the first person of color to assume the Tufts presidency.
