The history of our town dates back to May 21, 1666, when Connecticut settlers landed on the shores of the Passaic River.
By Howard Pincus. The history of the Village of South Orange did not start in 1869 with the creation of the Village but rather on May 21, 1666. On that day the first settlers sailed to New Jersey from Connecticut and founded Newark. Some of the people who settled Newark later drifted over toward the Orange mountains in search of better farm land.
