Sacramento Valley National Cemetery is the seventh national cemetery built in California and the 124th in the national cemetery system. Like many lands in the western United States, the Homestead Act of 1862 facilitated the settlement of the site of what is now the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery.

The City of Sacramento owns the cemetery, which today encompasses 44 acres (18 ha). It was declared a State Historic Landmark on May 5, 1957, by the State Historical Landmarks Commission. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. Notable burials
