John Lumley, 1st Baron Lumley, KB (c. 1533 – 1609) was an English aristocrat, who is remembered as one of the greatest collectors of art and books of his age.
The first creation was in 1384 for Sir Ralph Lumley but after being beheaded by the citizens of Cirencester for his part in the Epiphany Rising, he was posthumously attainted and his title forfeit. The next creation was in 1461 for the grandson of the first baron, Sir Thomas Lumley in 1461.
The Lumley inventories are a group of inventories documenting the extensive collections of paintings, books, sculptures, silver and furniture accumulated by John, 1st Baron Lumley (c.1533–1609).
This print is one of 180 plates which make up the 'British School I' album, presumably compiled in the early nineteenth century. This album is prefaced by a nine-page text entitled ‘Notes relating to the early history of British Art; to assist in forming a collection of illustrative engravings’.
George Lumley, 3rd Baron Lumley, (1445–1509) was an English nobleman and soldier. Depending on the source, he may be referred to as either the 2nd Baron Lumley (of the second creation) or the 3rd Baron Lumley (of the first creation), due to the attainder of his ancestor Ralph Lumley.
Lumley was involved in the Ridolfi plot for the re-establishment of Roman Catholicism in England, and was imprisoned from 1569 to 1573. The portrait is attributed to the highly talented Netherlandish artist Steven van der Meulen who worked in England from around 1561 until his death.
LUMLEY, JOHN, fifth (or sixth) Baron Lumley (1493–1544), born in 1493, was elder son of Richard, fourth or fifth baron Lumley, by Anne, daughter of Sir John Conyers, K.G., of Hornby Castle, Yorkshire. He fought at Flodden (1513), was summoned to parliament on 23 Nov. 1514, and received livery of his lands on 18 July 1515.
