  1. James Butler, 2nd Earl of Ormond (4 October 1331 – 18 October 1382) was a noble in the Peerage of Ireland. He was Lord Justice of Ireland in 1359, 1364, and 1376, and a dominant political leader in Ireland in the 1360s and 1370s.

  3. Earl of Ormond, 1633–40. Butler's inheritance of the earldom, combined with his marriage to Elizabeth Preston, had reunited one of the most ancient and largest Old English estates in Ireland. It consisted of close to 300,000 acres, spread over some seven counties, though its core lay in Counties Kilkenny and Tipperary.

  4. Alfred Webb. A Compendium of Irish Biography. 1878. Butler, James, 2nd Earl of Ormond, was born at Kilkenny, 4th October 1331, and was consequently but six years of age at his father's decease. He was given in ward to the Earl of Desmond, and afterwards to Sir John d'Arcy, whose daughter he married during his minority.
