The heiress to the vast Percy estates married the Duke of Somerset; and her granddaughter married a Yorkshire knight, Sir Hugh Smithson, who in 1766 was created the first Duke of Northumberland and Earl Percy, and it is their descendants who now represent the famous old house.

Percy, who was described by Mrs Nicholson Calvert as ‘a chattering good humoured civil young man’, was utterly dominated by his father. The 2nd Duke of Northumberland, a former soldier, was vain, arrogant and crotchety. He attached himself to the Prince of Wales in 1788, but his real political influence was slight.
Hugh was duke of Northumberland for 48 years, serving with the Northumberland Hussars during the Second World War. In the harsh financial climate of post-war Britain, his judicious management of the estates provided great stability and continuity.
