Frederick Arthur Stanley was the second son of Edward Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby and prime minister of the United Kingdom in 1852, 1858–59 and 1866–68, and Emma Caroline Bootle-Wilbraham, the daughter of Edward Bootle-Wilbraham, 1st Baron Skelmersdale and Member of Parliament.
Frederick Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby (15 January 1841 – 14 June 1908) was the Governor General of Canada from 1888–1893. In North America, he is best known for donating a trophy to be given to Canada's best amateur hockey club.
An avid sportsman, he built Stanley House Stables in England and is famous in North America for presenting Canada with the Stanley Cup. Stanley was also one of the original inductees of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
