  5. In 1704 philanthropist Elizabeth Fuller of Watford founded a charity school on land adjoining the parish churchyard. The original building, which was known as The Free School, may still be seen. The 40 boys and 20 girls were taught to read, write and 'cast accounts'.

Mrs Fuller died in 1709 but the school continued with fund left in her will and with other endowments. "By the 1880s it was no longer viable and a new school building was constructed in Derby Road.

The Free School for boys and girls later developed into the separate Watford Grammar School for Boys and Watford Grammar School for Girls.
