Edith Lewis (December 22, 1882 – August 11, 1972) [1] [2] was a magazine editor at McClure's Magazine, the managing editor of Every Week Magazine, and an advertising copywriter at J. Walter Thompson. Lewis was Willa Cather 's domestic partner and was named executor of Cather's literary estate in Cather's will.

Cather asked Edith Lewis to destroy the manuscript, which was well advanced, when she died; Lewis did, although a significant fragment remains in an archive. Deeply bothered by the Second World War and the death of many in her friends and family, Cather experienced moments of sadness and fatigue during these years, but as Lewis later remembered:

As a child, she attended school in Nebraska, eventually leaving the state for a college education in Massachusetts. While enrolled at Smith College, Lewis majored in English. Upon graduation, she returned to Nebraska to teach elementary school.
