The Oranges (locally / ˈ ɑː r ən dʒ ɪ z /) are a group of four municipalities in Essex County, New Jersey, all of which have the word Orange in their name. The four municipalities are Orange, East Orange, South Orange and West Orange.
South Orange was organized on January 26, 1861; Fairmount (later to become part of West Orange) on March 11, 1862; East Orange on March 4, 1863; and West Orange (including Fairmount) on March 14, 1863.
With approximately 65,000 residents, the four square miles of East Orange are adjacent to the municipalities of Orange, West Orange, South Orange, Montclair, Glen Ridge, Bloomfield and Newark. Origins Originally founded as a township in 1863, East Orange became incorporated as a city on January 1, 1909.
History of East Orange. The "Town at the River" included land extending from the Passaic River to the Orange Mountain. For one hundred and forty years, what is now East Orange continued to be a part of Newark, and until 1780 was designated as "Newark Mountain." Orange, including all the Oranges, was separated from Newark November 27, 1806.
