Kentucky was originally a single county in Virginia, created in 1776. In 1780, Kentucky County was divided into Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln counties. Kentucky was admitted as a state in 1792, when it had nine counties.

Christian County was the birthplace of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America. The war brought military take-over of Hopkinsville at least half a dozen times by both Confederate and Union forces.
