The Burgtheater (German: [ˈbʊʁk.teˌaːtɐ]; literally:"Castle Theater" but alternatively translated as "(Imperial) Court Theater"), originally known as K.K. Theater an der Burg, then until 1918 as the K.K. Hofburgtheater, is the national theater of Austria in Vienna.

The Burgtheater traces its roots back to 1741, when an enterprising entrepreneur sought permission to convert a disused building on the Michaelerplatz (close to the imperial court) into a stage. Despite the initial blessing of Empress Maria Theresa, the new theatre struggled to establish itself.
The Palais Erzherzog Ludwig Viktor is one of the best known Ringstraßenpalais in Vienna. It was built between 1863 and 1866. The first building to be built on the Schwarzenbergplatz, it is now a subsidiary house of the Burgtheater .
Today’s Burgtheater was founded on 14 March 1741 under the reign of Empress Maria Theresia, who wanted a theatre close to her imperial palace (Hofburg). Her son and the next Austrian Emperor Joseph II named it German National Theatre in 1776.
Das Burgtheater, errichtet von 1874 bis 1888, war das letzte Glied in der Kette der Prunkbauten zur Neugestaltung der Ringstraße. Erbaut von den beiden Architekten Gottfried Semper und Karl von Hasenauer, gehört die prachtvolle Außenfassade zu den beliebten Sehenswürdigkeiten Wiens.
