Boston was named and officially incorporated on September 30, 1630 . The city quickly became the political, commercial, financial, religious and educational center of Puritan New England and grew to play a central role in the history of the United States.

The borough also includes numerous villages in the surrounding rural area. The borough borders South Holland to the south, North Kesteven to the west, and East Lindsey to the north.
