Robert Lutyens (13 June 1901 – 1972) was an English interior designer, the son of the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens. He designed the interiors of the homes of several of the directors of Marks & Spencer and subsequently joined the board of that company in 1934.
Robert Lutyens was born on 13 June 1901. He was the son of the architect Sir Edwin Landseer Lutyens (1869-1944) and worked as an interior designer and painter from the 1920s onwards. Between 1927 and 1931 he was in partnership with Robert Wemyss Symonds (1889-1958) in the architectural and interior design firm Symonds & Lutyens
Robert Lutyens also designed lighting and our Acrylic Standing Lamp is a modern facsimile of one of his original lighting designs. He designed the Brook House Ceiling Light for a Syrie Maughan interior, the original is shown at the top of the blog.
The story of the rapid rise to fame of the young Lutyens in the 1890s is well known. With a series of superb Romantic vernacular houses to his credit, Lutyens enjoyed a considerable reputation by the first years of the new century and in the 1920s he was a national figure.
