Cyril Connolly (born September 10, 1903, Coventry, Warwickshire, England—died November 26, 1974, London) was an English critic, novelist, and man of letters, founder and editor of Horizon, a magazine of contemporary literature that was a major influence in Britain in its time (1939–50).
Cyril Connolly was the celebrated critic-editor of Horizon magazine. His book Enemies of Promise, about why he failed to become a novelist, has become the sacred text of literary underachievers ever since. Connolly’s early friends included George Orwell, Cecil Beaton and Kenneth Clark.
