John Lockwood Kipling and Rudyard Kipling, c.1890. John Lockwood Kipling CIE (6 July 1837 – 26 January 1911) was an English art teacher, illustrator and museum curator who spent most of his career in India. He was the father of the author Rudyard Kipling.

John Lockwood Kipling (1837–1911) has been long overshadowed by the literary fame of his son Rudyard Kipling, born while Kipling senior was employed as the professor of architecture at the Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy School of Art and Industry in Bombay, modern day Mumbai.
During his 28 years in India, Lockwood Kipling amassed a private collection of Indian popular art that reveals a man with an insatiable curiosity about its history and culture.
