Margaret Mahy ONZ (21 March 1936 – 23 July 2012) was a New Zealand author of children's and young adult books. Many of her story plots have strong supernatural elements but her writing concentrates on the themes of human relationships and growing up.
Margaret Mahy is New Zealand’s most celebrated writer for children and young adults. In a 55-year career she published more than 120 titles: novels, picture books, short stories, poems and educational texts, as well as writing for film and television.
Margaret Mahy lives on Long Island, New Zealand, and travels widely, promoting reading. She has held writing fellowships in New Zealand and Australia, and in 2003 was awarded the Order of New Zealand for her contribution to children's literature and an honorary doctorate from the University of Canterbury.
