François-Victor Hugo (28 October 1828 – 26 December 1873) was the fourth of five children of French novelist Victor Hugo and his wife Adèle Foucher. François-Victor is best known for his translations of the works of William Shakespeare into French, which were published in 18 volumes between 1859 and 1866.

Shakespeare só passa a ser reconhecido como grande gênio na França quando o movimento romântico se firma no país, cuja rivalidade com a Inglaterra é não apenas histórica, mas também literária. E é na escrita do maior nome do romantismo francês — Victor Hugo (1802-1885) — que Shakespeare ganha o prestígio que lhe era injustamente negado.
François-Victor Hugo’s complete translation appeared, offered a choice of forty-eight sonnets in verse, was less amused. In his preface, he described the sonnets as the intimate and occasionally shameful portrait of the man Shakespeare, “like pages fallen out of a diary” (Shakespeare 1856,xiv).
