Gerald Scarfe was born on 1 June 1936 in St John's Wood, London, the son of Reginald Scarfe, a City banker, and his wife Dorothy, a teacher. As a child Scarfe suffered severely from asthma, and spent a lot of time in bed, being frequently in hospital - "a very lonely childhood" he recalled.
