Young Lucy is bereaved and sent to live with her cousins. She makes a friend in Alice. But Alice has been dead for over a hundred years and wishes to drag Lucy back in time, to play with her for eternity.
When her Aunt Olive dies, Lucy is taken in by her kindly aunt (Phyllida Law) and uncle (Royce Mills) but cannot stand the modern reality of her three high-spirited cousins – Rachel (Oona Kirsch), Patrick (Russell Lewis) and Bill (François Evans) – finding them brash and uncouth.
Lucy keeps going back and forth between the disheveled present and the well-postured past as Alice tries to entice Lucy to stay in the past with her — genuinely, at first, but then with an obsessive overtone.
