Alexander Stepanovich Popov (sometimes spelled Popoff; Russian: Александр Степанович Попов; March 16 [O.S. March 4] 1859 – January 13 [O.S. December 31, 1905] 1906) was a Russian physicist who was one of the first people to invent a radio receiving device.

Engenheiro elétrico e inventor russo nascido na vila de Turinsk Rudniki, distrito mineiro dos Urais, pioneiro no emprego de um fio aéreo como antena de transmissão e recepção de sinais de rádio (1897). Formado em São Petersburgo, ensinou na Escola naval de Torpedo, retornando à São Petersburgo, como professor (1901).

With knowledge of these advances, Popov improved the coherer tube by equipping it with a means to reset itself. He then began experimenting with the device as a tool to predict thunderstorms, although he soon recognized other possible applications for his new technology.
