Friedrich Ernst Peter Hirzebruch ForMemRS (17 October 1927 – 27 May 2012) was a German mathematician, working in the fields of topology, complex manifolds and algebraic geometry, and a leading figure in his generation.

Friedrich Hirzebruch was the son of Dr Fritz Hirzebruch and Martha Holtschmidt. Fritz Hirzebruch was the headmaster of a secondary school in Hamm, and he also taught mathematics there.

Friedrich Hirzebruch (universally known as Fritz) died on May 27, 2012, at the age of eighty-four. He was the outstanding German mathematician of the postwar years who helped to restore mathematics in his country after the devastation of the Nazi era.
