He developed new surgical techniques, including the eponymous osteoplastic foot amputation. His application of scientifically based techniques extended surgery from a craft to a science.

He was the first to emphasize the importance of anatomy and its application in surgery. Nikolay Pirogov was born in Moscow on November 13 (25), 1810 the youngest of 13 children (Pirogov, 1990, 2011 ).
