George David Birkhoff (March 21, 1884 – November 12, 1944) was one of the top American mathematicians of his generation. He made valuable contributions to the theory of differential equations, dynamical systems, the four-color problem, the three-body problem, and general relativity.

George David Birkhoff was the foremost American mathematician of the early 20th century, who formulated the ergodic theorem. Birkhoff attended the Lewis Institute (now the Illinois Institute of Technology) in Chicago from 1896 to 1902 and then spent a year at the University of Chicago before.

The greatest American mathematician of the early 20th century. Birkhoff was educated at the University of Chicago, where he received his Ph.D. in 1907. He then taught at University of Wisconsin (1907-1909), Princeton (1909-1912), and Harward (1912-1939).
