Danilo I Petrović-Njegoš (Serbian Cyrillic: Данило I Петровић-Његош; 25 May 1826 – 13 August 1860) was the ruling Prince of Montenegro from 1851 to 1860. The beginning of his reign marked the transition of Montenegro from a traditional theocratic form of government ( Prince-Bishopric ) into a secular Principality .

The order of Prince Danilo I was established by Prince Danilo Petrović-Njegoš in 1852 in recognition of Montenegro’s independence. This order continued to be bestowed by the House of Petrović-Njegoš after the death of Prince Danilo I although this order was changed by King Nikola I Petrović-Njegoš who created 5 classes for the honor.
