Despenser the Younger claimed the Lordship of Glamorgan in 1317 through his wife Eleanor de Clare. He then accumulated more lands in the Welsh Marches and in England.

Eleanor de Clare was the eldest daughter of Gilbert de Clare (the 6th Earl of Hertford, 7th Earl of Gloucester and Lord of Glamorgan), and his second wife Joan of Acre, who was the daughter of Edward I and Eleanor of Castile.
27 de fev. de 2020 · While her younger sisters languished in disgrace, Eleanor de Clare remained very high in the king’s favour, to the point where one continental chronicler stated that they were lovers and that she was pregnant by him in 1326. Edward’s extant accounts of 1324/26 give some credence to this rumour.
