resumo. Este ensaio empreende uma incursão pela correspondência de Goethe, estimada em aproximadamente vinte mil cartas escritas (a cerca de 1.700 destinatários) e 25 mil recebidas. Em primeiro plano estão cartas escritas na velhice, sobretudo as de condolências e as que expõem suas concepções estéticas ou detalhes de seu processo criativo.
