  3. Johann Joseph Ignaz von Döllinger (born Feb. 28, 1799, Bamberg [now in Germany]—died Jan. 10, 1890, Munich, Ger.) was a German historical scholar and a prominent Roman Catholic theologian who refused to accept the doctrine of papal infallibility decreed by the first Vatican Council (1869–70).
