Catherine Astrid Salome Freeman OAM (born 16 February 1973) is an Aboriginal Australian former sprinter, who specialised in the 400 metres event. Her personal best of 48.63 seconds currently ranks her as the eighth-fastest woman of all time, set while finishing second to Marie-José Pérec's number-four time at the 1996 Olympics.

She was young, female and Aboriginal, marking the organisers’ hopes that the Games would promote reconciliation in Australia. Dressed in a white fireproof bodysuit, Freeman carried the torch up several flights of stairs.
World Championship 400m wins in 1997 and 1999 made Cathy Freeman the favourite for the 2000 Sydney Games, where she was also given the honour of lighting the Olympic cauldron. Under pressure to perform well for her home crowd, she won a resounding victory in the 400m final – Australia’s 100th Olympic gold medal.
Now, she has re-lived everything surrounding the Sydney 2000 Games – her background, lighting the Olympic flame at the Opening Ceremony, and winning Olympic gold – in a new documentary about her life, FREEMAN, from Australian broadcaster ABC.
