Born in Saratov province, the son of a tradesman, Alexei Rykov joined the Social Democratic Party in 1898 and supported the Bolsheviks after their split with the Mensheviks.
Between 1918 and 1920 and 1923 and 1924 Rykov was chairman of the Supreme Council of the National Economy (VSNKh). From 1921 to 1924 he was deputy chairman of the Council of People's Commissars (Sovnarkom).
