O primeiro lançamento oficial foi o FreeBSD 1.0 em dezembro de 1993, coordenado por Jordan Hubbard, Nate Williams e Rod Grimes. O objetivo original era produzir um snapshot intermediário do 386BSD, de forma a poder corrigir uma série de problemas com este sistema, que o mecanismo de manutenção não era capaz de resolver.
