Czartoryski, author of the principles of the kingdom's future constitution, was one of the five members of a provisional government, and his career seemed to be set. To everyone's surprise, he was not appointed general lieutenant of the kingdom, the tsar preferring a docile opportunist (and former Jacobin!), general Zajonczek.
