Alfonso Ferrero La Marmora (Italian pronunciation: [alˈfɔnso la ˈmarmora]; 18 November 1804 – 5 January 1878) was an Italian general and statesman. His older brothers include soldier and naturalist Alberto della Marmora and Alessandro Ferrero La Marmora, founder of the branch of the Italian army now called the Bersaglieri. Biography

Alfonso La Marmora graduated from the prestigious Turin military academy in 1822 before going on a European study tour. In 1823 he was commissioned by the Sardinian king to direct the modernisation of the Sardinian artillery. On 18 June, 1836, he founded the elite Bersaglieri corps.
General La Marmora commanded the Sardinian force which fought on the side of the Allies in the Crimean War. He had a distinguished military career, and held the post of Minister of War before and after the campaign.
