An Afrikaner (or "Boer"), he helped establish the South African Republic (Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek or ZAR; also referred to as Transvaal), was the first president of the ZAR, and also compiled its constitution.

Biography. Marthinus W. Pretorius received the B.Eng. degree in mechanical engineering and the Ph.D. degree in engineering management from the University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa, in 1982 and 1999, respectively. He is currently a Professor of technology management with the Graduate School of Technology Management, University of Pretoria.
