Samuel Ogle had trained for a legal career, and when called to the bench in November 1688 it was at the request of Lord Chancellor Jeffreys. This may suggest that Ogle was a Dissenting collaborator of James II, but his appointment as recorder of Berwick at the Revolution throws some doubt upon such an interpretation.
