Newton Booth (December 30, 1825 – July 14, 1892) was an American entrepreneur and politician who served as the 11th Governor of California. Early life [ edit ]
The Newton Booth Historic District is located in the southeast corner of Sacramento’s original 1848 street grid, immediately northwest of the major interchange of the U.S. Route 50 and the Capital City Freeway.
Biography. Newton Booth was raised in Indiana. He graduated from Asbury College in 1846 and then studied law. Booth moved to California in 1850 where he enjoyed success as a merchant and wholesale grocer before beginning his political career.
Newton Booth was a Republican governor of California from 1871 to 1875, who resigned to serve in the U.S. Senate. He advocated for the Chinese living in California and helped to organize the Dolly Vardens political party.
IDEA OF GOVERNMENT. It follows that my own idea of government is that law should be the simplest possible expression of the necessities of society, and administration a matter of business, not of show. It does not follow, if we all agree in this, that we shall be able to realize our ideal. I trust, however, we shall honestly try.
