Metacomet. Metacomet (1638 – August 12, 1676), also known as Pometacom, [1] : 205 Metacom, and by his adopted English name King Philip, [2] was sachem (elected chief) to the Wampanoag people and the second son of the sachem Massasoit. His older brother Wamsutta (or King Alexander) briefly became sachem after their father's death in 1661.

Metacomet, also known as King Philip or Metacom, was the son of Chief Massasoit and the leader of the Wampanoag tribe. He fought against the English colonists in King Philip's War, which lasted from 1675 to 1676, and was killed by a praying Indian in 1676.

King Philip ’s War (also known as Metacom ’s War, 1675-1678) was a conflict in New England between a coalition of Native American tribes organized under the command of Metacom (also known as King Philip, l. 1638-1676), chief of the Wampanoag Confederacy and the English immigrants who had colonized Native American lands.
Metacomet was then beheaded and quartered¬-a truly barbaric act. His body was strung in the trees so his remains would be scattered. From Mount Hope, Metacomet's head was sent to Plymouth, one hand was sent to Boston, and Alderman was given the other. Metacomet was the younger son of the Wampanoag Massasoit (Great Sachem) Ousamequin.
