  6. Robert Charles Winthrop, 180994, American statesman, b. Boston. He studied law under Daniel Webster, was admitted (1831) to the bar, and was (1835–41) a Whig member of the Massachusetts legislature. He served (1842–50) in the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming speaker in 1847.

  7. After being defeated for the position of governor of Massachusetts in 1851, Winthrop withdrew from politics. Since 1839 Winthrop had been a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society, and in 1855 was elected president, a position which he held for thirty years.
