Redvers Buller was a British Army officer and a recipient of the Victoria Cross for his actions in the Zulu War of 1879. He later commanded British forces in South Africa during the Second Boer War and was a prominent politician and landowner.

At dawn on 28 March 1879 Buller’s force began to make its way up the eastern slope of Hlobane. What neither Wood nor Buller knew was that a Zulu army of 20,000 men was approaching en route for Khambula. As soon as this was sighted Buller had no option but to withdraw.
