Howard Elliott Ashman (May 17, 1950 – March 14, 1991) was an American playwright, lyricist and stage director. He is most widely known for his work on feature films for Walt Disney Animation Studios, for which Ashman wrote the lyrics and Alan Menken composed the music.
Howard earned a BA in Theater from Goddard in 1971 as his interest in theater began to move from performance to directing and writing. Howard attended Indiana University, where he was a member of the Indiana Theater Company, the university’s professional repertory company.
Howard Ashman was a native of Baltimore who grew up loving MUSIC. In 1974, after graduating from Goddard College in Vermont and receiving his MFA from Indiana University—where he was also a member of the professional acting company—Ashman moved to New York.
