The Banishment (Russian: Изгнание, Izgnanie) is a 2007 Russian psychological drama film directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev. The film is a loose adaptation of The Laughing Matter, a 1953 novel by Armenian-American writer William Saroyan. It stars Konstantin Lavronenko and Maria Bonnevie.

More. Review by nick ★★★½. The Banishment incorporates Andrey Zvyagintsev's forte of stormy family drama, with breathtaking visuals that are immediately reminiscent of Tarkovsky classics. Chronicling a twisty marriage story, The Banishment is a patient movie, with lengthy buildup to the final reveal that's only moderately startling.
