Vladimir Salnikov is a former Soviet and Russian freestyle swimmer who set 12 world records in the 400, 800 and 1,500 m events. He won two Olympic gold medals in 1980 and one in 1988, and was named the Male World Swimmer of the Year in 1979 and 1982.
