Zakes Makgona Mokae [1] (5 August 1934 – 11 September 2009) was a South African -American actor of theatre and film. Life and career. Mokae was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, moved to the United Kingdom in 1961, and to the United States in 1969. [2] . He turned to acting at the same time as playwright Athol Fugard was emerging.
Zakes Mokae was a South African actor who starred in theater, film and TV. He collaborated with Athol Fugard and won a Tony for \"Master Harold...and the Boys\". He died in 2009 in Las Vegas.

Moving to England in 1961, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and became one of the most distinguished thespians in South Africa for over two decades.
