It was released in 1973 by Columbia Records and is the last studio album released by the original line-up before it dissolved. As with the group's previous album, The Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire consists solely of compositions by John McLaughlin.

Within the first thirty seconds of “Meeting of the Spirits,” I was convinced this was the greatest fusion album ever recorded.
30 de jun. de 2020 · This is an album of elevenses, a prime-number example of the irreducible impossibilities of the original Mahavishnu Orchestra. The Inner Mounting Flame was an amazing record, but Birds of Fire rages from the very beginning and rarely lets up in intensity.
30 de nov. de 2017 · We will play only the music of Mahavishnu, from Birds of Fire, The Inner Mounting Flame, Visions of the Emerald Beyond, Between Nothingness and Eternity, The Lost Trident Sessions and Apocalypse. To bring this music back is pure joy for me. The way it was received in 1971 was incredible.
