Sydney Dickens, c. 1860. Sydney Smith Haldimand Dickens (18 April 1847 – 2 May 1872) was a Royal Navy officer, the fifth son and seventh child of English novelist Charles Dickens and his wife Catherine.

His childhood nickname, "Ocean Spectre," came, as Dickens's biographer John Forster wrote, "from a strange little weird yet most attractive look in his large wondering eyes." Perhaps appropriately, he joined the Royal Navy and reached the rank of Lieutenant.
Sydney Smith Haldimand Dickens, the seventh child and fifth son of Charles and Catherine Dickens, was named after a member of the Haldimand family noted for his charitable works, William Haldimand (1764-1862).
