Após o fim do casamento com Dora e o adultério dela com um jornalista norte-americano, em 1936, ele casou pela terceira vez com uma estudante de Oxford, Patricia ("Peter") Spence, que tinha sido a governanta de suas crianças no verão de 1930. Russell e Peter tiveram um filho, Conrad.
