Madagascar is a 2005 animated comedy film and the first film in the series. Directed by Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath , the film tells the story of four Central Park Zoo animals: Alex the lion ( Ben Stiller ), Marty the zebra ( Chris Rock ), Melman the giraffe ( David Schwimmer ) and Gloria the hippo ( Jada Pinkett Smith ).
The Madagascar animals fly back to New York City, but crash-land on an African nature reserve in Kenya, where they meet others of their own kind, and Alex especially discovers his royal heritage as prince of a lion pride.
