The Rand Afrikaans University (Afrikaans: Randse Afrikaanse Universiteit) was a prominent South African institution of higher education and research that served the greater Johannesburg area and surroundings from 1967 to 2004.

The University of Johannesburg came into existence on 1 January 2005 as the result of a merger between the Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), the Technikon Witwatersrand (TWR). Prior to the merger, in 2004, the Daveyton and Soweto campuses of the former Vista University had been incorporated into RAU.
The University of Johannesburg was formed as a result of the merger between the former Technikon Witwatersrand, Vista University and Rand Afrikaans University on 1st January 2005. The University consists of a number of faculties and has four campuses in and around Johannesburg with a diverse and multi-cultural community.
Viljoen’s love for the Afrikaans language and culture and his understanding of the position of the white Afrikaners from the 1930s until the 1960s placed him in a favourable position to spearhead the RAU’s role as the first Afrikaans university on the Witwatersrand.
